Huge news for the Magento community: it’s now official, as announced by Willem Wigman at Meet Magento NL 2025 — the Hyvä theme will become open source starting from version 1.4, scheduled for release on November 10 at 3:00 PM. The code will be published on GitHub, and developers will be able to claim up to five free Packagist keys directly from hyva.io.
This marks a major turning point in the history of Magento Open Source. Once a paid product, the theme now becomes a free and open foundation for building fast, modern, and maintainable frontends. Only add-ons such as Hyvä UI (now priced at €250) and premium support will remain paid. Existing customers will keep all their current benefits, including any bundles they have already purchased.
Opening the core theme confirms the Finnish company’s commitment to the community. Magento Open Source now has a modern, maintained, and high-performance theme that is freely accessible to all.
